This production is based on the classic novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne published in 1850. The story takes place in Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649. Hester Prynne has committed an inexcusable crime and has confounded her prosecutors by refusing to name her partner in sin. But the man who allows her to protect him suffers more from pangs of conscience than he would have from public humiliation. The climax shows the timeless truth that compassion and understanding are forever more powerful than vengeance and cruelty.
